The hidden gateway
Awareness · Protection
Grooming is a predatory process where an individual builds an emotional connection with a young person to lower their inhibitions for exploitation or abuse. It happens both in person and online. Understanding the tactics is essential for the protection of young people.
Establishing themselves as a friend, mentor, or romantic interest.
Targeting loneliness or insecurity.
Creating a sense of obligation.
Encouraging secrecy from family.
Normalising inappropriate behaviour.

Official 1CHANCE Deterrent
Visual Deterrent
Having a visual gang crime and violence deterrent for your child is as powerful as it gets. Children and youths are highly influenced by what they see — which is why we created an anti gang crime and violence poster that actively discourages crime and violence.

Confronting the Truth
Young people carry knives primarily due to fear, believing it provides protection in dangerous environments.
Often, this stems from peer pressure, gang involvement, or a desire for status and street credibility.
Other factors include social media influence, lack of trust in authorities, and socioeconomic vulnerabilities.

Educational Resource
Understand what success truly means during youth and how to build it in a way that lasts. Real success is not an accident — it is the result of mindset, discipline, values, learning, and resilience.

The Story Behind 1CHANCE
Hello, my name is Benoit Chaves, founder of 1CHANCE. I founded 1CHANCE in memory of two friends of mine, Karim Simms and Promise Nkenda, who were both tragically killed due to an ongoing gang feud in East London.
Ever since, I have been on a mission to create awareness and prevent youths from joining gangs. I have first-hand experience with gangs due to the location I lived in and understand how gangs recruit youths.
This website highlights core issues such as youth grooming, joint enterprise, and drug dealing. I hope our law poster will deter youths from committing crime and serve as a daily reminder to stay on the right side of the law.

The cost of silence
Education · 01
A gang is a group of people who share an identity and act together. A criminal gang is involved in violence, drug dealing, intimidation, or organised crime. These groups often have names, symbols, territories, and ongoing conflicts with rivals.
Education · 02
Gangs use violence for power, fear, identity, or survival. It is often used to control territory, protect income, or maintain reputation. Many acts are reactive — driven by fear or pressure to appear strong.

Youth grooming is a process where a young person is manipulated for exploitation or abuse.
Education · 05
Joint enterprise is a legal doctrine where multiple people can be charged for the same crime if they assisted or encouraged it — even if they did not personally commit the act.
Two or more people share an intention to commit a crime.
One person carries out the offence.
Others who assisted or encouraged can be charged equally.
All parties may face the same conviction and sentence.

Drug dealing is the act of selling or supplying illegal substances. It carries severe legal penalties and often becomes a gateway into deeper gang involvement, debt cycles, and violence.
Education · 07
A drug debt trap is when someone is forced into illegal activity to repay a debt — often manufactured by the very people exploiting them.
A drug 'loss' or fake debt is forced upon the victim.
The victim is coerced into dealing to repay it.
The debt grows; freedom keeps slipping out of reach.
Refusal to comply leads to harm to them or their family.
